* What led up to the situation?
play single player and there's no bot,
* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
ineffective)?
there's "sort of" workaround from
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1945910.html :
Simply make sure the “/home/username/.config/alien-arena” exists and
then copy both the “botinfo” and the “arena” directories from
“/usr/share/games/alien-arena” into it.
