Bug#762763: steam refuses to install after uninstall

I encountered this as well. I needed to purge the package, not just
remove it. Then I was able to reinstall it.
The purge process wasn't working for me initially. The purge script
attempts to warn you that it doesn't purge all files, and the warning
check was failing in this block:
if [ "$1" = "purge" ]; then
db_input high steam/purge
db_go
fi
The error was
"steam/purge" doesn't exist
I commented out that block in /var/lib/dpkg/info/steam.postrm, purged
the package, and installed from the latest unstable (1.0.0.49-1). It
also purges correctly now.
