Would you mind sending g-d-p queries to
game-data-packager at packages.debian.org in future, so all the maintainers
get them? (In particular, Jonathan Dowland, the original author.)
You can subscribe to that list using pts-subscribe or at
<https://packages.qa.debian.org/common/index.html> if you want to be one
of the people contacted; let me know if you do that, so I can stop
Cc'ing you.

Yeah, perhaps it is. I originally had the "provides" indicating the
final "goal" files rather than the direct contents (e.g. for zip-in-zip
situations), but that's no longer necessary now that I've taught the
Python code to unpack recursively.
We could at least use the "provides" as the default for unpack.unpack,
to avoid having to provide unpack.unpack in common cases.
It would probably still be necessary to have it available as an override
if the things inside the compressed/packed file are not named the way we
expect them to be.
