As root or with sudo privileges you can run:

	dpkg-reconfigure locales

Just choose en_US or en_GB in addition to de_DE and then change the
default settings to the English locales. A reboot might be necessary so
that the changes can take effect. You can always switch back to German
or any other supported language with the same command.

Thanks. This looks like a bug in FreeOrion. More precisely it appears
that the Ogre plugin for GiGi, the graphical user interface, is buggy.
Ogre was replaced by SDL2 in newer releases of FreeOrion. There is a
high probability that you won't see this issue with FreeOrion in
testing/unstable. It would be great if you could try this version and
report back if it solves your problem.
