Buggy xboard!

Hey Guys, 

I'm a GNU/Linux noob trying to learn everything I can about this amazing
system. I'm learning how things work by 
switching over to using a raspberry pi for my full time pc. I tried to
download xboard to play a game of chess, but 
the program is quite buggy running on the pi. 

The main problem I'm having is that, when clicking say 'file' on the
menu bar, the drop down menu appears and then 
disappears in a flash, and I have no time to click anything on the menu.
What could be going wrong? 

I hope I'm reporting this to the right people and not unnecessarily
bothering you guys!
