Then you'd have to provide all needed libraries yourself.

What would else happen if some game needed libpng12.so.0
and "apt autoremove" just removed it after the 1.6 transition ?

$ locate libpng12.so.0
/home/tchet/.steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/amd64/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpng12.so.0
/home/tchet/.steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/amd64/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpng12.so.0.46.0
/home/tchet/.steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/i386/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libpng12.so.0
/home/tchet/.steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/i386/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libpng12.so.0.46.0

The "Steam Runtime" is basically some old ubuntu LTS rootfs.
