In $STEAMDIR/error.log we see:

Failed to load steamui.so - dlerror(): /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libpango-1.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_log_structured_standard

Launching /usr/games/steam with STEAM_RUNTIME_PREFER_HOST_LIBRARIES=0 works around this problem for now.
