Updated the system with aptitude which included an update for widelands.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?

I started widelands, clicked the options button and widelands crashed.

This should not happen. Please file a bug report on version 1.0(Release).
and remember to specify your operating system.
