I've been looking through the handful of packages which are still
using wxwidgets3.0 with an eye to seeing if any can usefully be

That comment is dated 2021-04-10 so it's actually more like 5 years ago
now.

That's long enough ago that the code is likely to need changes for wx3.2
so it seems most sensible to address this bug by packaging a recent
snapshot from upstream (or convincing upstream to make a release) which
would eliminate the wxwidgets dependency.

Updating to newer upstream code also seems like probably it's the best
way to address most of the other open RC bugs.
