Ahhh, now I understand.  That's always confusing me since sometimes
packaging changes might be required while upstream code is fine.  I
confirm that while being upstream and Debian Maintainer at the same
time using this setup might have attractive aspects.

I'm fine with whatever you do.  For your comfort I've created

  https://salsa.debian.org/games-team/smpq

Feel free to cherry-pick changes from there or use this repository for
the Debian packaging.  Just let me know and I will sponsor your upload
if you consider yourself ready.  In case you prefer your remote
repository somewhere else than Salsa just let me know.  I can easily
remove that repository in case it is not needed any more.
