to build source after binary build:

Note: There is a recent change in gettext 1.0 which may be relevant:

/usr/share/doc/gettext/NEWS.gz

TLDR: The PO files are source code. Source code is not meant to be
changed during the build. Maybe you can avoid that by forcing a more
recent set of gettext macros.
