Thanks Sebastien, that really helped.  After a few minutes of compiling,
the whole thing worked perfectly.

For those of you who want to know how to recompile the deb, download the
rhythmbox source tarball and diff from Developer Information.  Unpack
and patch (patch -p0 < rhythmbox-0.6.0-1.diff) the tarball.  Make sure
you have all the developer prerequisites, update the changelog with
`debchange` and `export enable_xine=3D"set"`.  Now, just `deb-buildpackage
-rfakeroot -us -uc`, and you're in business.  It might be a good idea to
bump the version number in the changelog so you don't have to hold the
package.

Can any other solution be found to this problem?  Maybe this bug should
be forwarded to the gstreamer people, unless this is a known issue.
