The problem i have (and still have) is that if one uses 
gnome-file-types-properties to change the icon of a mime type, it isn't
reflected in nautilus. 

I've also tested file-roller 2.4 and it has the same problem, so now i have no 
clue who is to blame 

You are never given a wish without also being given the
power to make it true.  You may have to work for it, however.
