Hm. Are you sure you are running the GNOME session and not the GNOME
failsafe session? There are currently issues with GDM that can sometimes
lead to running the failsafe session until you manually select GNOME
again.
You can try ps aux|grep ssh-agent to see which session was launched, it
should appear in the ssh-agent command line.
Otherwise, gnome-session may have died, is there a core file around?
