I did, but it didn't seem to help; same observed symptoms.  Rather, a
few more processes seem to have started, but still nothing on the
screen except the sawfish pager, and the session manager has exited or
crashed.

A pure gnome-session with sawfish configured as the window manager.  I
have no .xsession file.
