I have the same problem but I DO have gnome-control-center and gnome-icon-theme installed... I did a clean install of Debian (d-i beta3 with unstable) and then Gnome. My "Home", "Start here" and "Trash" icons are using the document icon rather than something more appropriate. Oskar
