This has been rectified. It appeared that gdm would crash and restart
itself every time the system was booted, and in the process skipped the
autologin. After much messing about and experimenting with kdm (which
wouldn't run at all) it appeared that it was having trouble accessing
the built in mouse (system is a Compaq laptop). I added psmouse to
/etc/modules and all is well.
