Package: gnome-session
Version: 2.4.2-4
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Recent upgrade to gnome-session hoses my login, apparently because of
the switch to making metacity the default wm. When I log in the
failsafe session, the session starts fine, using metacity as the
window manager.

But when I log in with my normal session (which calls for sawfish), I
get a hang after the sawfish pager starts. ps shows that the session
manager has exited in that state, and only the sawfish pager is
running; nothing else from my startup.

I'm happy to switch to metacity (assuming it doesn't fail completely
the way it did back when I first tried it), but I can't even log in on
my normal session, and afaict the session manager only lets me edit
the current session.

My .xsession-errors file contains the following after th

/etc/gdm/PreSession/Default: Registering your session with wtmp and utmp
/etc/gdm/PreSession/Default: running: /usr/bin/X11/sessreg -a -w /var/log/wtmp -u /var/run/utmp -x "/var/lib/gdm/:0.Xservers" -h "" -l ":0" "tb"
/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
File error: Broken pipe, #<process running: /usr/lib/sawfish-pager/pager>

 .
   * rules: force poweroff and reboot paths (closes: #242091)
   * gnome-wm: get the default window manager from gconf. It now uses the
     /desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager/default key
(closes: #241361, #244694). The x-window-manager alternative is now only
used when nothing else is found.
   * Source .gnomerc at startup (closes: #242065):
     - gnome-session.install: install 55gnome-session_gnomerc in Xsession
       directory.
     - 55gnome-session_gnomerc: source .gnomerc if we are running
       gnome-session.
     - also handle the case where we are running x-session-manager,
       symlinked to gnome-session.
