Probably grave, actually (I think I've got reportbug misconfigured on this
machine). gdm is completely unusable. Probably upstream, at a guess.

The logs seem to indicate that gdmlogin/gdmgreeter dies, causing everything
else to go away. Visually, the stippled X background appears, then the wait
cursor, then it dies. Repeatedly. Problem first appeared when the gnome 2
gdm was introduced. Problem appears for gdmlogin or gdmgreeter, appears for
local and remote. startx works for root (although not usably; no window
manager); it fails miserably (and without adequate explanation) for the only
user account on the machine. (So fixing gdm probably still won't give me a
working X on alpha, but it's clearly one place to start)
