It just errors out. I used 'tee' and captured the entire dist-upgrade.=20
Here are the relevant parts:

Preparing to replace gconf2 2.2.1-2jds1 (using
.../gconf2_2.6.2-1_i386.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement gconf2 ... Preparing to replace libgconf2-dev
2.2.1-2jds1 (using .../libgconf2-dev_2.6.2-1_i386.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement libgconf2-dev ... Preparing to replace libgconf2-4
2.2.1-2jds1 (using .../libgconf2-4_2.6.2-1_i386.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement libgconf2-4 ...

So no problems there. But, later on I get:

Setting up libxml2-dev (2.6.11-2) ...
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of libgconf2-4:
 libgconf2-4 depends on gconf2 (>=3D 2.6.2-1); however:
  Package gconf2 is not configured yet.
dpkg: error processing libgconf2-4 (--configure):
 dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of libgtk2.0-common:
 libgtk2.0-common depends on libgtk2.0-0; however:
  Package libgtk2.0-0 is not configured yet.
dpkg: error processing libgtk2.0-common (--configure):
 dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
Setting up libfreetype6 (2.1.7-2.1) ...

and finally ends with:
Errors were encountered while processing:
 libgconf2-4
 libgtk2.0-common
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I also issued a bug report with libgtk2.0

Yes, I have the same:
Version: 2.6.2-1
Depends: libc6 (>=3D 2.3.2.ds1-4), libglib2.0-0 (>=3D 2.4.1), liborbit2 (=
>=3D
1:2.10.0), gconf2 (>=3D 2.6.2-1)

>=20

Perhaps a versioned pre-depends or a conflicts with gconf2 < 2.6.0?  I
am not an official maintainer and am not sure of all the issues involved
with either, or if there is a better alternative.

Am I to assume from your reaction that normal woody upgrades are not
affected?
