I've got this too - unless I dig around and figure out which lockfile or stale file or recorded PID or whatever, GNOME is utterly unusable. Without the panel, the only way of escaping GNOME is to kill X with CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE (presumably); which is probably what caused the problem in the first place. ii gnome-panel 2.6.2-3 -- Jon Dowland
