I don't think it's a kernel problem.
Isn't it an X probrem?

When I do 

 $ dia -e tmp.png /usr/share/doc/dia-common/examples/UML-demo.dia

from console, without X Window,
tmp.png is created as White and Black PNG image. 
It is expected behavior except the one line message:

could not import gtkcons.py

On the other hand, when I issue same command line from krxvt on X Window System,
error messages about color conversion in non-interactive application come 
and wrong color PNG image is produced.

I'm using X server 4.3.0

  xserver-xfree86            4.3.0.dfsg.1-8             the XFree86 X server                                                  

And my graphic driver is ati.
Changing color depth doesn't make deference.
