I would like to add some additional comments to this wish.

* I'm a fairly technical user/developer.
* I like keybindings and use them frequently.

I spent several months really annoyed about the lack of a "url" bar in
the new file picker until I randomly tried "ctrl-L" before filing a bug
report (since the new chooser "feels" a lot like nautilus).

The only way I was able to discover this hidden feature was by wild
guessing, based on some fairly advanced knowledge of nautilus usage.
This seems totally unacceptable for a novice user: is my <archetypal
non-technical relative> ever going to discover this without some
prompting from another clued-in user?

Without knowing how to do this, it is impossible (as far as I can tell)
to take advantage of the fantastic VFS plugins that gnome offers
(userland access to SMB and SFTP shares) and allows ease-of-use parity
with other desktop OSs (eg: win32 and OSX)

I'd really like to see one of the following fixes:

(1) Add a URL bar back into the dialog. This is a useful tool that
allows users to learn the "real" location of objects by clicking around
the file system / network paths. It also allows for copy-and-paste when
a path comes from another application that isn't integrated with some
rich launcher UI.

(2) Ensure that network locations are browsable from the "common
locations picker" on the sidebar. At least on my system, only local FSs
show up there. This isn't a very good solution, as not all remote
filesystems support discovery (eg: SFTP:// or SMB:// across subnets).

Thanks!
