I think the 2.6 kernel is a red herring. I have the same problem on kernel 2.4.23 and 2.4.22 before that. I am also using the intel8x0 ALSA driver, so perhaps this is the source of the problem. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way to make rhythmbox/gstreamer use real ALSA output instead of OSS. Any hints?
