I'm trying again to find a GUI mail client with decent Maildir support
and I was pleased by the improvements in Balsa 2.0. However as I used
it I noticed that nothing was happening to messages on disk as I
manipulated them through Balsa.
I can delete a message in my inbox and see it in the trash folder, but
the file is still in my inbox/cur directory until I exit Balsa. This
happens despite having "Empty Trash on exit" deselected and regardless
of the setting of "Delete immediately and irretrievably". (It's quite
easy to retrieve such "irretrievably" deleted messages.)
I noticed the same behavior when refiling messages. They appear in
Balsa to be refiled, but nothing seems to change on disk until Balsa is
exited. This leaves other mail clients and utilities oblivious to the
changes a user thinks he's made through Balsa.
The disconnect between Balsa's folders and the Maildir files extends to
new folders being created. If I add a new Maildir directory, it does
not appear in Balsa unless I restart or also "create" the folder in
Balsa.
Messages which are deleted outside of Balsa cause even more problems.
Instead of just realizing that they're gone, Balsa complains about being
unable to retrieve the body of the message. The behavior gets worse -
it seems to be locked right now because I switched from a folder with
messages I deleted through the filesystem.
Please consider immediately reflecting in Maildirs any changes made in
Balsa, and supporting a way to scan for changes to Maildirs without
restarting (upon "Check" for example).
