If you are using alsa, you should have such links :
lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 11 2004-07-04 12:25 /dev/mixer

It really looks like a configuration problem.
Nevertheless, i'm working on 2.6.2, with Gstreamer support reenabled, so
i would be pleased if you could tell me if it still occurs when 2.6.2 is
uploaded.
