Bug#255793: capplets: gnome-settings-daemon grabs the mixer and
won't let go

Package: capplets
Version: 1:2.6.1-7
Severity: normal
My sound module (cs46xx) needs to be unloaded when I suspend. It has
always been this way - although there are moves to fix it. However,
suddenly I can't remove the sound module because something has the
sound device open:
# lsof | grep snd
gnome-set 15944 martins 34u CHR 116,0 2624 /dev/snd/controlC0
esd 15954 martins mem CHR 116,16 2800 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
esd 15954 martins 6u CHR 116,16 2800 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
I use esd so, at suspend time, I can put esd into standby-mode and
remove the sound module. Now I can't do that because
gnome-settings-daemon has the mixer open.
The worst thing about this is I haven't assigned any volume changing
functionality to any keys, so I don't want anything to touch the
mixer, and there seems to be no way of changing this stupid behaviour.
Nothing in a control panel, nothing in gconf-editor.
Notes:
* Turning off the "Enable sound server startup" and killing
gnome-settings-daemon, and having it restart, doesn't help.
Note: If I turn the above on, surely I want to multiplex my sound
and I don't want anything permanently grabbing the device?
* I have "Sounds for events" disabled".
* I have no keys bound to adjust sound volume or whatever.
* Switching off "Sound an audible bell" doesn't help.
Why does gnome-settings-daemon have the mixer open when it isn't going
to use it? Perhaps it needs a "Don't mess with sound at all"
checkbox? Perhaps it should check to see if it is going to need the
mixer before opening it? Hmmm...
I've decided to work around it by renaming the default mixer device,
killing gnome-settings-daemon, waiting for it to restart and then
renaming the mixer device back again... That means only need to work
around the problems once every login... unless, of course,
gnome-settings-daemon is restarted somewhere along the line...
Thanks...
peace & happiness,
martin
