It used to work, I don't know why it's not working.
I tried setting its sgid bit and chgrp'ing it to utmp, but gtk
applications can't run with suid/sgid bits set.
How was it working before?

Yes, I noticed that. How to make it possible to write to utmp?
Are the permissions of /var/run wrong here?
lofofora@cerberus:~[0]$ ls -l /var/run/utmp
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root utmp 21888 2004-03-26 16:18 /var/run/utmp
Seems fine?
