...maybe we should really read the changelogs before posting.  ;-)
/usr/share/doc/gdm/changelog.Debian.gz reads:
  
  * Use default gnome-session purge-delay (closes: #221448)
  (woah!)
  
  * Use /etc/X11/Xsession.d/* for the tail end of session setup
        (closes: #191711, #192252, #212120, #219040)
  (solves my LC_CTYPE-problem)
  
  * etc. .... /etc/dm/Sessions replaces the old Sessions-dir and will be
    populated by the packages (e.g. gnome.desktop in gnome-session)

a big sorry to the package maintainer.
(However, transition could have been smoother, couldn't it?)
