Umm, yes it does.  There is no need for these sessions to do anything
other than start their binary.  gdm can't make use of these scripts
_because_ it uses the standard Xsession.d dirs now.

Yes, it's nonsense.  I should conflict with a package that can be used with
the default session perfectly well, because that package doesn't provide it=
's
own session .desktop file yet, and still provides a session script (which
can't be used with the current version of gdm).

And create a mess for the end user.  I can currently run gnome-session from
gdm 2.4.4.7-1.  This would not be possible with your solution.
