More followup. I have managed to get nautilus to run again after I
removed ALL of ~/.gnome* folders. Removing ~/.nautilus alone did not do
the trick.

Running under 2.4.25 did not fix the problem, so this has to do with
configuration of nautilus.

Now gnome-panel refuses to quit after logout. But that's another bug...
