I ran dist-upgrade this morning and GNOME icons are now replaced by default
placeholders. The desktop for a clean user now looks like:

Looking at the updated packages (apt-listchanges output attached) gnome-vfs2
looked like the culprit but downgrading to the previously installed version
(2.8.2-1) didn't fix the problem.
