I have changed .gnome2/totem_config:

With

audio.speaker_arrangement:Pass Through

I got 5.1 sound. I would suggest that this bug is being left open, because of
usability: Joe user would like to choose between "Stereo" "Surround", and
eventually (which is ALSA territory, but a usability issue as well) "Optical
Digital Output" "Coaxial Digital Output" "Headphones" "Line Out" (depends on
the sound card). I must say that I really had some serious issues to solve with
my ICE1712 based sound card (Terratec 6fire 24/96) to get something over the
optical digital output, no go for Joe User.
I am very glad that I can now watch DVDs with Linux, with free software. Thanks
for your effort, I only wanted to suggest some usability improvements.
