I have a similar problem, but I did some digging and it appears that the problem
(well, my problem) is that it tries to open the device in read-write mode.  On 
my system, this results in an operation-failed (read-only filesystem). If you 
run nautilus-cd-burner from a terminal, you see it report the open failures.

I'm not exactly sure what is causing that.  It's probably relevant that I use 
devfs.

If I edit the source (2.8.5 is what was downloaded) and change all open()s of 
the device to use O_RDONLY instead of O_RDWR, it works.
Upstream CVS shows that changing from O_RDONLY to O_RDWR around
version 1.49 of cd-drive.c.

running 2.4.24.
