I used apt-get and aptitude to install the pygtk and other packages... I
didn't add /usr/local/ myself, that is the way that it was configured
when I updated the pygtk to meet dependencies. Before I exported the
PYTHONPATH in .bashrc, I was getting the import errors when I tried to
start gdesklets from the command line. I got the suggestion to
explicitly set the path from users on gnomesupport.org in the gdesklets
forum.

What changes are you referring to? I compiled gdesklets from source and
later added experimental sources to sources.list and got the packages
from a debian mirror and let aptitude install the packages and still
have the problem only when trying to start with gnome-session.
