Thanks for your work on this. I just did some further testing to find
out why the workaround you suggested does not work for me. When I
start my X session with xfce4 and then replace xfwm4 by sawfish, your
trick works, but if I start my session with sawfish from the very
beginning, even this does not work. I assume that xfce probably does
some gtk magic at startup that sawfish fails to do, but unfortunately
I don't know enough about these things to look at this in further
detail.
