Installed gdesklets from unstable using apt-get. Running gdesklets shell
from the command line generated the message
(gdesklets-shell:4573): Bonobo-Activation-CRITICAL **:

I manually upgraded various libraries gdesklets depended on, until
the crash went away. The one that fixed the problem was
omni:~# /usr/bin/apt-get install python2.3-gnome2
