After recently upgrading my version of gnome-applets, I noticed that
"Modem Monitor" seems to have superceded "Modem Lights".  The
modemlights_applet allowed the user to set the modem device entry to any
value; this was particularly useful for users of GPRS via Bluetooth,
because /dev/rfcomm0 (or whichever number might also be used) could be
entered into the configuration and the applet would work wondefully.
With an appropriately configured peer entry and knowledge of the
lockfile location, the modemlights_applet could easily toggle on and off
GPRS connectivity via Bluetooth.

With the new applet, selection of the device under the Modem tab of the
 Interface properties dialog is limited to only the most common legacy
devices, /dev/modem, /dev/ttyS0, /dev/ttyS1, /dev/ttyS2, /dev/ttyS3.
There is no option for another entry, and the Autodetect commmand button
does not do it, either.  If this applet could be refactored to allow for
the flexibility that its predecessor had, that would be great.

I realize this is probably an upstream wishlist item, but I figured I
would leave that to the far-more-capable hands of Debian GNOME team.
