I do not have any special settings in my X environment. It is basically
just a standard installation without any manual tweaking.

Yes, it works fine from a local tty console. However, when I login to 
the same machine from a terminal window on X, the problem appears again.

The problem even appears when the X server with the terminal window
is running on a remote machine.

The pygtk check seems to depend on some external circumstances somhow.
