Package: gconf
Version: 1.0.9-5.1
Severity: normal

Sorry if I already reported this, I cannot find it in the DTS.

gconf takes far too much space in the /etc directory. Space is an
issue, because the root file system may be (and is, in my case) hosted
on a small partition.

On my system, gconf takes over 3MB of space, and is the first in terms
of size, followed by X11 with little less than 3MB. All the others
occupy less than 1MB, and only 20 occupy more than 100KB.

This happens even if I only use very few programs that are administered
by gconf.

Moreover, the directories under /etc/gconf are written automatically,
that is, they are not user configuration files, which means that they
should go somewhere else.

As of version 2.10.1-2, GConf can now use only /etc for its own
configuration, and for system administrator defaults.

There are a few remaining packages putting their schemas
in /etc/gconf/schemas, and bugs were reported against all of them.

There are still many packages shipping their defaults
in /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults, but all they need is a rebuild using
debhelper >=3D 4.9.8.1. Please file bug reports against these packages if
you feel it is appropriate.
