Package: gdm
Version: 2.4.1.6-1
Severity: normal

The recent upgrade of gdm fails to recognize my PATH as set in
/etc/login.defs. The correct PATH for my system is
/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/games
However, gdm ignores that and sets something completely different. In
particular, /usr/local/bin is placed behind /usr/bin on the new path.

This problem is corrected by uncommenting lines 39-41 in
/etc/X11/gdm/Sessions/Gnome.

This is a followup for
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=208424

Gdm 2.6 now use /usr/share/xsessions and /etc/X11/Xsessions.d to manage
sessions.

The use of /etc/login.defs seems to have been a hack that have
been removed (it is for the "login" program only).
I find trace of it in bug reports for gdm 2.4. Maybe it is still
used but in all case this is not the place to setup the xsession
environment (be it gdm, kdm ...).

/etc/environment, PreSession dir for gdm , or adding a script
/etc/X11/Xsession.d are better bet.
http://www.jirka.org/gdm-documentation/x241.html "The Script Directories"

Feel free to reopen or ask this to be reopened if your problem
remains.

Cheers
Alban

PS: login.defs PATH definitions are not used in debian. The shell
profile files overwrite them. YOu should not worry about
maintening them up to date. /etc/profile and /etc/environment
are usually enough, /etc/X11/Xsession.d filling remaining needs.
