We need to know what packages were installed on your system when this
error occurred.

Frankly, we (maintainers of Gtk software) discussed this on IRC and
couldn't find a possible way of getting such a borken system.
libpangoft is correctly versionned in the library and in the package so
that it is theoritically impossible to use the mix a version A library
with a program wanting version B and vice-versa.
In order for us to diagnose the bug you experienced and be sure that
it's not a breakage of your system caused by the update path you've
choosen, we need either:
- the versions of the packages prior to the breakage, during the
breakage, and after the breakage,
- or a way to reproduce it ourselves.
(I happen to use a stable/testing system, and I could install gftp on
it and run it without problem.)
Please update your report with the informations I mention.
Regards,
PS: please use "reportbug" to report bugs
