Maybe recommanding gamin | fam can comletely fix this issue.

gamin does not use portmap.

Also fam should not help with on the fly gnome-panel menu update.
Gnome-panel poll the directories if fam(and dnotify)/gamin(and
inotify kernel patch) are not available. This produce load on i/o
but works as well.

Maybe the bug should be cloned to separate the security issue
Recommands does not help much as the policy state to install
recommands by default, gamin can help , but as told none are
recquiered and they even does not reduce load much if you have a
light installation.

The gnome-panel not updating on the fly could be a gnome-panel
bug or gnome-vfs/fam/gamin bug, but if so i expect it would produce other
nasty effects (nautilus/gnome-vfs/gnome-panle crashes or
zombies).
There was a bug with gconfd , this looks like it:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=268721&archive=yes
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=148028

I don't see the relation with updating the menu and gconf but it
seems to fix it.

Cheers
