There is a typo in the debian-gtk-gnome post: you should name the file
/etc/gnome-vfs-2.0/vfolders/applications.template
and not
/etc/gnome-vfs-2.0/vfolders/applications.templates

You should get a file '~/.gnome2/vfolders/applications.debmenu'
and a lot of files in '.local/share/applications/menu-xdg'.

You should get a new menu folder named 'Debian-user' (this is not in the
legacy menu) that include the standard menu entries and the new one.

However, I suggests you first try with KDE to see whether your
menu-xdg setup is correct.
