Bug#316744: gnome-applets: Modemlights applet fails upon insertion into panel

When attempting to insert the Modemlights applet into a panel (following
the usual procedure: right mouse button, "Add to Panel", "Modem
Monitor", "Add"), I get the following error message:

| 
| Do you want to delete the applet from your configuration?

No matter whether "Yes" or "No" is being selected, the following related
processes are still present, although nothing appears in the panel:

$ ps x | grep -i [m]odem
 9565 ?   S   0:00 /usr/lib/gnome-applets/modem_applet --oaf-activate-iid=OAFIID:GNOME_ModemApplet_Factory --oaf-ior-fd=43

~/.xsession-errors contains this snippet:

In order to ensure that this behaviour is not caused by an errorneous
personal setup, I repeated the above steps using a pristine user
account, however yielding the same results.

Other applets (i.e., the cpufreq and mixer applets) are working well.
