You can deal with this by setting a key on the keyboard to toggle between languages.

Go to the Properties for the keyboard applet, click on the tab labelled
"Layout Options" (not "Layouts").  Find the entry titled "Group Shift/Lock behavior". 

It gives you several dozen alternatives for the toggle key (yes, those
Windoze keys can be useful after all!).
