I have observed this problem with two debian-based
distributions: Simply Mepis and Kanotix, both
installed to the hard drive.  I just got a new
computer last Saturday, and spent a few days trying
different distributions out to see how they felt, and
for both Kanotix and Simply Mepis, I was able to
install Gnome with apt-get on Saturday, July 9, but no
later than Monday, July11.

 This is a transitional problem, consequences of ongoing transitions in
 sid.  Please don't use sid if you can't deal with such problems.  This
 will be fixed by the next upload of the gnome meta-package.

 Please use the "reportbug" tool to report bugs, it provides more
 information to maintainers such as the versions of packages depended
 on, and the distribution you track.
