I use the Modem Lights applet to control a PPP connection. Used to work,
but since a recent upgrade it started to fail: whenever the PPP
connection is established and I press the applet button to close it, the
applet crashes and I get a popup window with a message like (approx: I'm
translating from Catalan):

«
Seems that the Modem Lights applet died unexpectedly.

Reload this applet?

[...]

NO YES
»

All other applets in my panel fail in exactly the same way, the
corresponding popup windows appear behind this one.

Pressing YES on each such window restablishes everything (that's why I'm
not marking this bug critical even though it affects unrelated software
in the system).

This is how my Modem Lights applet is configured:

- Update every 5 seconds.
- Show connection time and throughput: NO
- Blink connection status while connecting: NO
- Connect command: "pon myProvider"
- Disconnect command: "poff myProvider"
- Confirm the connection: NO

and in the Advanced tab:

- Device: ppp0
- Lock file: /var/run/ppp-myProvider.pid
- Check the lock file owner: YES
- Use XDSI: NO
