 Please don't upgrade if you want to track a "stable" Debian
 distribution.  Upgrading would mean upgrading your whole desktop.
 I'm a bit frustrated by your report, here's why:
 - you're the first to report such a breakage, so it's a bit surprizing
   that noone complains about this breakage,
 - when you describe your breakage, I can't think of anything which
   would trigger that,
 - even if we find a bug in gnome-panel 2.8 and fix it, if you're the
   only person affected, the stable package won't be upgraded with the
   next update to the table release (3.1r1).
 Of course, nothing of this is "your fault", I'm just feeling frustrated
 because I don't understand, can't help you understand, can't think of
 anything to clarify, and even if I would understand, I'm quite sure
 this wouldn't get fixed in 2.8.
 Hence, I can not give you further advice, and I hope someone (another
 GNOME maintainer for example) can sched some light on this.
