Bug#314979: gnome-panel does not run on kernels 2.4.x

gnome-panel (and nautilus) does not work for kernels 2.4.x due to hal not
running, and hal is only runnable on kernels 2.6.x. Hal is needed by
gnome-volume-manager (1.2.1-1). I need to use hsflinmodem, version
hsflinmodem-5.03.27 which is the latest "free" version without speed
restrictions not 6.03.00lnxt04072900full etc which are both non-free and
have the speed limit 14.4 kbps.

Anybody ported hsflinmodem-5.03 to kernels 2.6.x?
